The Latchkey Hour is a novel by Marla Fenwick, forthcoming from GenX Press.

It is the stretch between the school bus and the headlights in the driveway. A house key on a shoelace. The television for company. The rule was not to answer the phone unless it was a parent, and the parent was late, and the child decided what late meant.

From the house

Fenwick does not write the hour as nostalgia. She writes it as training. The adult in the book can still hear a car from three blocks away and know whose it is.
